Was Canada Effective in World War II? ASK THE WORLD

I used to always state that Quora.com was a site where people could ask questions on any topic, and those who feel qualified attempt to answer them.¬† “It’s much like Yahoo! Answers”, I would further explain.¬† But it’s becoming increasingly clear that this is not a fair comparison.¬† ¬†It’s becoming more like a bunch of yahoos WITH answers making up answers.¬† And doing an even worse job with some of the questions.¬† Quora doesn’t make people stupid.¬† It just makes stupid people more accessible to the general public.¬† And as the old adage says – “stupidity is contagious, and there’s no known cure”.

The question popped up a few days ago, and I couldn’t believe it.¬† I also couldn’t keep quiet.¬† How dare the uneducated chatter class insult the memory of the tens of thousands of Canadians who gave their lives for our global freedom (yep, including the freedom of the brainwave that wrote this question, no matter where he or she lives).¬† This writer should be happy to discover that Canada was very effective in World War II, along with their Allied partners.¬† It’s why we aren’t speaking German or Japanese today.

WHAT FOLLOWS IS MY RESPONSE, word-for-word, to this highly controversial question.  Photos were later added for this blog article only.

You‚Äôll have to excuse my homeland of Canada – we were amiss apparently by not personally educating YOU on our war effectiveness from 1939‚Äď1945. Let‚Äôs fix that. There are a few people you should talk to:

  • Workman John Hawkins of Toronto checks the tags of Bren machine-guns at the John Inglis Co. plant in Toronto. Canada produced millions of arms for the Allied war effort. ¬© Archives Canada mikan-3197327

ASK THE BRITISH  how effective we were. Before we even sent a single man, gun, plane, tank or ship Рwe made sure to take care of the British people themselves.  Remember, they live on an island, and risked being isolated by the Nazis, after the war started in September 1939.

Canadian exports accounted for as much as 77% of British wheat and flour consumption in 1941, 39% of the bacon, 15% of the eggs, 24% of the cheese, and 11% of the evaporated milk that the British imported globally.

Abandoned British equipment on the beach at Dunkirk. Although 340,000 troops were evacuated from Dunkirk, the British Army left behind: 120,000 vehicles, 600 tanks, 1000 field guns, 500 anti-aircraft guns, 850 anti-tank guns, 8000 Bren guns, 90,000 rifles and half a million tons of stores and ammunition. (Credit: LIFE Magazine, 1940)

Britain also had to leave 75,000 of their 80,000 vehicles behind in the evacuation at Dunkirk in 1940. Virtually defenseless on the ground, Britain turned to Canada – and particularly the Canadian auto industry – to replace what had been lost. Canada not only replaced those losses – we also did much more.

Canada produced more than 800,000 military transport vehicles, 50,000 tanks, 40,000 field, naval, and anti-aircraft guns, and 1,700,000 small arms. 38% of this production was used by the British military alone. The Canadian Army “in the field” had a ratio of one vehicle for every three soldiers, making it the most mechanized field force in the war.

Canada also loaned $1.2 billion on a long-term basis to Britain immediately after the war; these loans were fully repaid in late 2006. That’s the equivalent of about $17.7 billion today.

  • Canadians landing at Juno Beach. (Credit: Le Conseil Regional De Basse-Normandie / Library and Archives Canada)

ASK THE FRENCH how effective we were. On June 6, 1944, 14,000 Canadian troops stormed Juno Beach, arriving on 110 Canadian ships and supported by 10,000 Canadian sailors, part of 150,000 Allied troops total, who were part of the greatest invasion by sea in world history. Canada was the only nation that captured its beach and fulfilled all Her orders on D-Day. We suffered over 1,000 casualties that day alone.

The French WILL tell you we were effective, by the way – they were occupied by the Germans for over 4 years – but then just 74 days after D-Day, we liberated Paris, and less than one year after D-Day, our little nation had assisted in bringing down the Third Reich completely – an empire that conquered 11 nations on 2 continents with 20 million battle-hardened troops, And Hitler was dead. Were we effective. They would shout a resounding ‚ÄúOui!‚ÄĚ

ASK THE DUTCH how effective we were. Our country welcomed Queen Juliana, Prince Bernhard and the other members of the Dutch royal family as our guests for 5 years, after the Nazis invaded their Kingdom in June 1940. Dutch Princess Margriet was born in Ottawa Civic Hospital.

Later, Canada almost single-handedly liberated the Netherlands from the Nazis on May 9, 1945, and the Dutch still celebrate Liberation Day (unofficially called ‚ÄúCanada Day‚ÄĚ) with Canadian flags flying in Amsterdam on that day, citizens still running to give our aged soldiers flowers as they march or ride in parades there.

In a decades-old Dutch tradition, schoolchildren visit the Canadian War Cemetery in Holten, Netherlands on Christmas Eve every year, where nearly 1,400 Canadian soldiers are buried, and they place candles on every grave. More immigrants arrived in Canada in the 1950s from the Netherlands than from any other nation in the world, including America. In fact, the 2016 Canadian Census reported 1,111,655 persons of Dutch origin living in Canada out of 37 million Canadians. Did they find us effective? They would say ‚Äúja!‚ÄĚ

  • In fact, I’d even recommend ASKING THE GERMANS how effective we were. Particularly the German troops that were garrisoned at the town of Zwolle, in the Netherlands. Canadian soldier L√©o Major was the only Canadian and one of only three soldiers in the British Empire and Commonwealth to ever receive the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) twice in separate wars. In 1945, he single-handedly liberated the city of Zwolle, the Netherlands from German army occupation. He was sent as a scout with one of his best friends, but he thought the town was too beautiful for a full scale attack. So the next rational option was to clear it out himself. A firefight broke out and his friend was killed, but that didn‚Äôt stop him – he put the commanders of each group of soldiers he found at gunpoint, and the entire unit would end up being taken prisoner as a result. He ended up taking nearly 100 Germans prisoner that night, until the entire city was clear of Nazis. He received his second DCM during the Korean War for leading the capture of a key hill in 1951.

(Credit: Globe & Mail.)

Canada declared war in Germany just 7 days after Great Britain and France, and had troops in Europe literally weeks later. It would take a further 26 months before the United States would enter the War. By the time the War was over, Canada had over 1.1 million soldiers in uniform – about 33% of our entire adult male population.

At the end of the Second World War, Canada had one of the largest navies in the world, with 95,000 men and women in uniform, and 434 commissioned vessels including cruisers, destroyers, frigates, corvettes and auxiliaries.

During the 2,159 days that Canadian soldiers fought across Europe, Asia and Africa, 45,000 were killed, and 55,000 were injured. Those total casualties were equal to nearly 1 out of every 10 soldiers that served.

Canadians are not a blunt, brash or boasting lot. We are famous for apologizing for things that aren‚Äôt our fault. So let me say ‚ÄĚsorry‚ÄĚ to you in that vein – during the War, our armed forces were too busy making scraps to make a scrapbook for posterity. Many of our soldiers were gone for six years and then had to be re-integrated back into society after the War. We were also kind of busy burying our dead, and helping rebuild the world.

We’ll be sure to get it right for World War IIIwhich ironically will likely be started by someone like you, asking ill-advised, inflammatory questions like this.

(Editor’s Note:¬† The answer above certainly struck a nerve, which I’m thankful for!¬† ¬†In just the last 30 days alone, nearly 50,000 people on Quora.com read my answer above, and I received dozens of very kind comments.¬† I’ve shared my favorite at the end of this article.

I’m also honoured to have been “upvoted” over 2,900 times, which, according to Quora, means that these readers “believe I answered the question asked and contributed in a meaningful way to Quora’s repository of knowledge”.

If only the ORIGINAL QUESTION had been written with that same goal in mind.

And for the very first time in my life, I believe, something I’ve written has been painstakingly translated word for word into French, by a man I don’t know and have never spoken to before!¬† Merci beaucoup, Pierre Luc Gaudreault de Montr√©al!¬† You did an amazing job / Tu as fait un travail incroyable!

And it’s comments like these that truly make my blog, Quora, Youtube, Twitter…all worthwhile.¬† Thank you Raymond Li!

[God’s Got A Plan For You!]

Is Europe Prepping For Disaster?

Hemvarnet_vapen_bra.svg

For the first time in over 40 years, since the spectre of the Cold War loomed across Europe, Sweden has called its entire Home Guard to begin immediate military drills, to bolster the country’s “defensive and operational capabilities”

But defense against WHAT?  What are they planning?  And wait until you see the book that was handed out to the citizens of Sweden this month – it may just give you pause that perhaps they know something we don’t know … or don’t want to deal with.

On June 6, 2018, the Kingdom of Sweden’s celebrated its National Day – much like July 1 in Canada or July 4 in the United States – by mobilizing all 40 Home Guard battalions in an unprecedented exercise, something they have not done in over 43 years –  since 1975.  That’s equivalent to over 22,000 reservists – only 12,000 fewer troops than currently serve in the standing Swedish Army!

micaelbyden

The Supreme Commander of Swedish Armed Forces, Micael Byden, released a statement in Swedish and offered in English as well on their website, which stated:

‚ÄúOur mission is to strengthen Sweden’s military defense and improve our operational capabilities.   We are testing the chain of mobilization for around half our organization, something we have not done since 1975.‚ÄĚ

The Supreme Commander never said in the brief statement, however, WHY exactly he felt this was necessary to do.  He has been the head of the Swedish Armed Forces since 2015, and again, not to put too fine a point on it, but these military maneuvers have not been conducted since the mid-1970s.  The Cold War seems to be long-since dead, and now Sweden wants to be prepared militarily?

Perhaps that’s because this isn’t about military readiness.  Why do I say this?  Because according to the English website of the Swedish Home Guard itself, their purpose is described in the following way:

Skyttesoldater_från_Hemvärnet_Revinge_2015-1
Swedish Home Guard troops in training. (Credit: Jorchr)

“The service is on high alert, with mobilisation times measured in hours rather than days or weeks. It is required to support the entire range of defence activities ‚Äď from civil support in peacetime to armed combat in war.

If Sweden was to be hit by a natural disaster, a major accident or other threat to society, the Home Guard is ready to support police, rescue services and others. The service also has CBRN platoons, traffic platoons and engineering units…

Home Guard units are contemporary military units, primarily tasked with protecting, monitoring, and supporting society at times of crisis, thereby providing a national and territorial bulwark for the defence and protection of Sweden.” (Emphasis mine)

It’s important to note that they aren’t the army.  There is a separate Swedish Army, Navy and Air Force of about 34,000 soldiers that are tasked with the full-time responsibility of protecting the Scandinavian Kingdom against armed threats from hostile powers, either foreign or domestic.  Again, reservists are only dispatched to deal with things like “natural disasters, major accidents or other threats to society”.

So do they know something we don’t know?  Perhaps.

In addition to these new military training operations for reservists, Sweden is also sending an updated version of a Cold War-era advice booklet on how to cope with an outbreak of war…

…to around 4.8 million households.

brochure1The 20-page pamphlet, titled “If Crisis or War Comes,” released officially in English and in Swedish, contains advice about where to find bomb shelters and how to secure basic necessities such as food, clean water, and heat. It tells Swedes they have a duty to act if their country is threatened for “total defence,” and was first published during the Second World War and subsequently during the Cold War.   “If Sweden is attacked by another country, we will never give up,” the booklet says. “All information to the effect that resistance is to cease is false.”

What on earth?  Why the push to send this to millions of homes right now, while also calling up their entire military on maneuvers?

But Sweden isn’t the only country that’s actively preparing its citizens for potential disaster.  According to the site The Local, Norway’s largest news site in English, the Norwegian government decided in August 2017 to give away free iodine tablets to anyone who wants them:

‚ÄúWe have seen an increasing number of nuclear submarines off Norway’s coast ‚Äď both visiting allies and Russian submarines patrolling off the coast all the way to Great Britain,‚ÄĚ Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority section manager Astrid Liland told NRK, a major source of news in the Norwegian language.

“Increased numbers of nuclear submarines along the coast of Norway increase the risk of radioactive accidents”, say authorities, “who have now decided to assess the viability of distributing iodine tablets to parts of the population.”

According to WebMD, iodine tablets are used for radiation emergencies, to protect the thyroid gland against radioactive iodides. Potassium iodide tablets for use in a radiation emergency are available as FDA-approved products (ThyroShield, Iosat) and on the Internet as food supplements.  You can even buy them at Amazon.ca.

61Hg3q5q5-L._SX569_According to The Local article cited above, 43 crates containing a total of three million iodine tablets are already being stored at a depot in Oslo as one of Norway‚Äôs nuclear contingency precautions.  At even a discounted rate of $1.00 a pill, that’s a lot of pills just sitting around waiting for what sounds like a nonsensical hypothetical situation.  Especially when you learn that, according to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commision:

The shelf life of IOSAT 130 mg tablets is 7 years and the shelf life of ThyroSafe 65 mg tablets is 6 years. For States interested in extending the shelf life of KI, the FDA has published guidance on shelf life extension for the tablet form of potassium iodide.

So unless this nuclear accident is going to happen in about 6-7 years at the most, all that medication will just go to waste.  Does this seem like a rational thing to be stockpiling, to prepare for an oddly-specific hypothetic nuclear submarine disaster?

1280px-Submarine_Oscar_classTo be sure, there have been 9 nuclear submarines sunk so far in history – 2 from the US, 5 from the former Soviet Union, and 2 from the modern Russian Navy, including the infamous Kursk, the massive 16,000-ton submarine destroyed in a major explosion on August 12, 2000, killing all 118 of its crew.

However, I think that perhaps another incident might be on the minds of these leaders across Western Europe.  I’m reminded that in the Book of Revelation 8:11, it speaks about a great star that will fall from Heaven and hit the ocean:
wormwood

The name of the star is called Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter.

Iodine pills are also useful for purifying water that is contaminated by virtually anything out there.  Even if an asteriod hit the ocean and made the water “bitter”.  It is especially intriguing to also note that the Russian word for “Wormwood” is CHERNOBYL, the devastated Russian nuclear power plant that melted down in 1986.  What a bizarre possible tie-in, that the Apostle John couldn’t possibly have known about nearly 2,000 years ago.

Perhaps the Norwegians are simply preparing as they state.  However, blaming a possible Russian submarine disaster for causing these preparations is even more interesting, when you consider that, on the other side of the former Cold War, the Russians also seem to be preparing for a major event as well.
russia-nuke-drills1

READ NOW:
40 Million Russians Conduct Emergency Drills ‚Äď WHY?

In previous articles, I have shared how the Russians recently completed construction on 5,000 bunkers in the city of Moscow to house all 11 million citizens – then, if that was not over-the-top enough, they held 2 different emergency preparedness drills in the last decade.

One drill involved 40 million citizens over a 4 day period.  The logistics alone of such an endeavour, including how they would be fed and watered, washroom and sleeping arrangements, would be mind-boggling.  Remember, these weren’t soldiers they were sending out for training – these were the average Ivans and Ivankas of Russia.

They also had completed another with 60 million Russian citizens.  So this is incredibly serious stuff.  WHAT ON EARTH are they preparing for in such large numbers?  And bunkers for every single citizen in Moscow?  No other nation on Earth has done anything even remotely close to that.  Imagine how much cement was used to create these 5,000 bunkers, each of which can hold 2,000 people or more in them.  Imagine the enormous human resource and financial costs?

Putin used the excuse of escalating tensions between Russia and the US near the end of the Obama administration as his excuse for building these bunkers.  What science fiction.  You don’t plan for and build emergency underground nuclear bunker housing for 11 million people in 1 or 2… or even 5 years.  That would likely take a decade or longer to complete.   In fact, the project may have started before he was even President of the Russian Federation.

Most experts would tell you that we haven’t been in the Cold War for years.  It is a distant memory that a high school student today would not even remember – most likely wouldn’t even know what it was about.  Yet, for some reason, NOW is the time that everyone in Europe decides to wake up and spend millions, even billions of dollars to prepare against nuclear calamities?  Hogwash.

To be sure, they are preparing for something And its something that could be coming sooner than later – possibly within the decade.  This is just speculation at the moment, but the enormously obvious signs seem to be just everywhere in Europe.  And once these realities about European preparations begin to really sink in, the painfully obvious follow-up questions must be asked:

Why has North America seemingly done NOTHING to prepare our citizens for these future calamities?  Are we just going to be told some major event is happening, 20 minutes before it does, to avoid panic, to avoid people quitting their jobs and stagnating the economy?  Are our political leaders really that cynical, that cruel, that compelled to continue the capitalist march forward to nowhere.

Truly stop for a moment RIGHT NOW and think about the above, and honestly answer those questions in your head to the best of your abilities.

I can hear most of you now.  This is just ridiculous nonsense.  Fair enough.  But to recap…

  • 60 million Russian citizens DID take part in a massive drill
  • Another 40 million Russians DID take part in a massive drill
  • 11 million bunker spots WERE built for every single citizen of Moscow
  • Disaster planning booklets WERE sent to 4.8 million Swedish homes
  • 22,000 Swedish reservists DID begin maneuvers for the first time in 40 years
  • 3 million Norwegian iodine tablets DO sit in the dark in 43 crates in a warehouse somewhere, just waiting for a calamity, and
  • ALL of this DID happen within the last 3 years

Fear mongering folly, you say?  Scare tactics?  Click bait?

Sorry, NO, those would be FACTS.

Still not convinced?  Ok, last attempt to wake you up: every one of those listed situations above took place in countries that are located directly beside each other on the map.

Awake now?  Great.  Now, you likely will want to review this.  And thank the Swedish government for providing it – your government never bothered.

What I DON’T Think About Israel – Part 1

IsraelIsrael Is Forever: Special feature to the Calling Out Community, Posted January 18, 2016.

The Old City of Jerusalem
The Old City of Jerusalem

The older I get, the more opinionated I become about the State and people of Israel. They are unlike any other people group, nation, race, or religion that exists today, or that has ever existed.

You likely don’t know where Botswana is on a map, nor frankly care. You couldn’t name two unique things about the Honduran people, and if you were totally honest, you would need a Google Search to tell me what language is predominant in Zimbabwe. Fair enough.

But if I say “Jew” and “Israel” – you instantly know who I am talking about, where they are located, what language they speak, what their houses of worship are called, who their Prime Minister is, what their currency is, the name of their holiest book, the name of their largest cities, what kind of climate they live in, one or two of their most famous kings or historical figures of the past.

Can you say the same about Switzerland? Kenya? Malaysia? Uruguay? Likely not. And there is likely no other country in history that is loved by more people and that registers a stronger connection with people that have never even visited it than the State of Israel.

55379440At the same time, everyone can come up with at least one negative news item regarding Israel that they have seen or heard reported and repeated by the mainstream media. And there has never been a single people group or nation that has been despised by more people around the world than the Jewish people and Israel. It is undoubtedly the only group on earth that has been targeted for eradication and the only race of people which has words related to both discrimination against them, and eradication of them:

an-ti-Sem-i-tism
an-tee-sem-i-tiz-uh m, an-tahy-sem-i-tiz-uh m] noun.
Discrimination against or prejudice or hostility toward Jews.

Hol-o-caust
(hol-uh-kawst, hoh-luhkawst)
(usually initial capital letter) the systematic mass slaughter of European Jews in Nazi concentration camps during World War II (usually preceded by the).

Jews Are Not Taking Over The World!

Let me be clear – the Jewish people are not reviled because of the actions of, the government of, the military of, or even as a result of the founding of the State of Israel. I and many other supporters of Israel will say with certainty that public disapproval with Israel exists because it is connected to the Jews, not the other way around.

I truly believe if there were no Israel, there would no less anti-Semitism in the world. The protection that Israel affords the Jews today would not be there in other nations, including in the United States. With no Israel, there would likely be a lot fewer Jewish people in the world. And we would all be the poorer because of it.

35c957bd9da29f3a420e5bf87abc1b561d590e8450e2e005fd3f1a271ee40539It’s no small feat for Israel to be in the media spotlight constantly today,¬†yet the reasons for it spouted by the anti-Semitic, anti-Zionist lot make no sense.¬† The number of Jews in the world is less¬†both in number and in % overall of population than at any time¬†in modern history.¬† The Jews for decades have been evilly, erroneously and eternally blamed for the world’s ills.¬† It’s why the Holocaust happened in the first place, though it made no more sense back then than it does to us today.

  • Yet there are still a lot of seriously whacked-out folks who think the Jews plan to conquer the world, or already have. ¬†Yet according to the American Jewish Yearbook:
  • In 1939, the global Jewish population was 16.18 million. In 1950, it was 11.5 million.¬† In 2008, it was 13.1 million.¬†¬† That means that there are 3 million Jews less¬†in the world today than there were 70 years ago.
  • ¬†The Jewish population in Europe was about 9.5 million in 1933. In 1950, the Jewish population of Europe was about 3.5 million.¬†Why?¬† Because¬†65% of all the Jews in Europe were murdered in the Holocaust.
  • The largest Jewish population in all of Europe was found in Poland in 1939.¬† However, by 1945, only 10% of Polish Jews were still alive.
  • Today there are more Jews in the United States than in Israel.¬† Yet, the population of Jews in the United States only grew by 500,000 people in 70 years, while the population of the United States overall grew from 132 million in 1940 to 308.7 million in 2010 (over 176.7 million people),¬† This means that the percentage of Jews in the population went from 3% in 1939, to 0.17% today. ¬†That doesn’t seem like a very logical or likely percentage of conquerors.
  • It took nearly 70 years, until 2013, for the population of Israel (6.1 million) to¬†equal the number of Jews who died in the Holocaust (6 million)
  • Only 2 countries contain over 85% of the world’s Jews¬† the United States and Israel.¬† And of those, 80% live in just 8 cities in the United States and 2 cities in Israel. ¬†Again, that global conspiracy just doesn’t hold water.
  • In 1948, the population of Jews in Israel was 716,700, which grew to 6.1 million in 2014, a growth of 850%.¬† However, Arabs only had a population of 156,000 in 1948, growing to 2.48 million in 2014, a growth of 1,589%.¬†

(As an aside:¬† How could Palestinians have claimed Israel as their own land in 1948, when they only had 21% of the population of Israel at that time,?¬† How can Palestinians state that they currently have a Holocaust under Jewish rule, when they have grown nearly 16 times¬†larger in population since 1948?¬† Today, they still represent less than 1/3 of Israel’s population.)

57456087Along with all the nonsense in the media today about Israel, there are some pretty fundamental beliefs about Israel and the Jews that I hear from major Christian pulpits as well Рeven sometimes from Jews themselvesand I just do not, will not or can not agree with some of it.

I’ve decided that it’s time to set the record straight. No more grey areas – I want everyone to know exactly where I stand, and to stop propagating some of the “phony baloney” I hear all the time.

Warning: some will find this to be highly controversial. However, please read right through to the end, as I believe it will put things into proper perspective for you. I might even win some of you over along the way.

As for everyone else¬†– you will not convince me, nor be given a platform to convince any of my followers, that Israel is anything but hat I’ve already stated. ¬†Comments are moderated and offensive ones will be deleted.

Just saying – this blog is not a democracy, you do not necessarily enjoy freedom of speech here, nor am I obligated to provide a soapbox for neo-Nazi or anti-Semitic wingnut filth.

Friday the 13th “Acts of War”

Once again, radical Islamic terrorists have struck at the heart of France – the city of Paris – and with devastating results.

The scenes were heartbreaking, as France faced its most deadly assault since the Second World War on Friday the 13th (November 2015).  With 129 dead and over 350 injured, it follows only ten months after three terrorist attacks in the French capital took the lives of 17 people.

images2ZPARCV8French President Francois Hollande ¬†condemned the attack as an “act of war” and vowed that France “will be merciless toward the barbarians of Islamic State group.”

An emergency security meeting was called to plan the French government’s response, and upon completion, Hollande declared three days of national mourning and raised France’s security to its highest level. In a very blunt statement, the French¬†President declared:

“ISIS is a terrorist army … a jihadist army, against France, against the values that we defend everywhere in the world, against what we are: A free country that means something to the whole planet.”

He vowed to show “no mercy” to ISIS militants – and earlier today (Sunday, November 15), CNN broke the news at 1:23 PM that in fact he had already kept his word:

The French Ministry of Defense has announced what it called a major bombardment of Raqqa, Syria, an ISIS stronghold.

In one hour Sunday there were at least 20 airstrikes on the city, according to both a pro-ISIS news agency and the activist group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently.

1086023_630x354The French have not backed down from the war rhetoric Рthey have in fact launched a large-scale military operation in response.  Which brings me to a very important point regarding the North American response to this tragedy.

Article 5 of the Charter of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, ratified on April 4, 1949 states:

Article 5

NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium
NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.

Graeme MacKay, The Hamilton Spectator - Tuesday October 7, 2014 ISIS mission reveals Liberal divide When Justin Trudeau leads the Liberal Party of Canada Monday in opposing a Canadian military mission against ISIS in Iraq, he will do so against the better judgment of many of his party√ēs grandees, who between them have influenced Canada√ēs military response to global conflicts, from Rwanda and Kosovo to Afghanistan and previous wars in Iraq. The genocidal jihadists, including Canadians and other Westerners, who fight under the banner of ISIS √íhave to be whacked, and whacked good,√ď Lloyd Axworthy, a former Liberal foreign affairs minister who aimed to put √íhuman security√ď at the heart of foreign affairs, said on CTV last week. √íIf you really want to stop them, you√ēre going to have to give a full-court press.√ď He was not alone in supporting the action Mr. Trudeau has vowed to reject, or in undermining the leader√ēs rhetoric before he used it. Former interim Liberal leader Bob Rae, for example, rejected the comparison, later made by Mr. Trudeau, to the √ífiasco√ď of the 2003 Iraq War. Former Liberal Senator Rom¬éo Dallaire dismissed a campaign of air strikes without ground troops as pointless, and former Liberal cabinet minister Ujjal Dosanjh calling for √írobust√ď Canadian military action. All these comments were made before Mr. Trudeau vowed to oppose the government motion for the ISIS mission. But by accusing Prime Minister Stephen Harper of using √íoverheated and moralistic rhetoric √Č to justify a war,√ď Mr. Trudeau has chosen a strategy that is likely to colour his political fortunes for months to come. And by favouring purely humanitarian action over military force, Mr. Trudeau seems to have broken with many of the party√ēs eminences √Ď if such a rift is already apparent, it could well go deeper. Graeme MacKay, The Hamilton Spectator – Tuesday October 7, 2014

In one of his first official acts as Prime Minister, Prime Minister Trudeau called his American counterpart and philosophical ally, President Barack Obama.¬†¬†Trudeau advised the media that, during the October 23¬†phone call, he iterated Canada’s intent to pull our CF-18s out of the airstrike program against ISIS.¬† At the time, the leftwing patted its own back in self-congratulation.

That decision was meant to be ideological, and to show that Canada doesn’t get pushed around by the U.S.¬† Well, at least we’ll assume those were the goals, because frankly it just came across as stupid as hell.¬† ISIS is a known threat to Canada, has even stated previously that they will kill Canadians in their own bedrooms.¬† This incredibly immature Prime Minister, and equally pacifist Cabinet and party, honestly believes that if they just back off of ISIS, they will stop threatening us.¬† Again, stupid as hell.

Even more astounding than the government’s outrageous backtrack on international commitments and the security of Canadians is the Canadian news media’s response to it, in light of France’s current nightmare scenario. They seem incredulous – even openly stating their opposition – to Trudeau’s announced decision to continue with his plans to resettle refugees and pull our jet fighters from the fight with ISIS.¬† Some comments include:

  • Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard, a Liberal, reiterated his opposition to Trudeau‚Äôs position to shut down the combat mission even as he told reporters that Canada should not step back from its commitment to accept Syrian refugees.¬† ‚ÄúThe democratic world is at war,‚ÄĚ Couillard told reporters. ‚ÄúIt is naive to think that we are not facing a state of war, different from the wars we have known but equally threatening.‚ÄĚ

“The fight against ISIS requires a strong humanitarian response, but also a¬†military response,”¬†Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Opposition, told reporters¬†Saturday. “It’s important that we remain resolute and support our allies.” Ambrose said Prime¬†Minister¬†Justin¬†Trudeau¬†will have the full support of the Official Opposition if he chooses to¬†reverse his position on Canada’s role in the¬†airstrikes.(CBC

Canada’s current government, under Prime Minister Trudeau, has absolutely no right to unilaterally ¬†pull out of NATO obligations – the organization has protected the nations of the North Atlantic for 67 years.

The Friday the 13th attacks by ISIS/ISIL, unlike any other terrorist attacks seen on a large scale in recent history, were a coordinated effort by a Sunni Muslim jihadist terrorist group that is in fact an army Рwith tanks, armed personnel carriers, rocket launchers and many other sophisticated weapons, as well as an estimated 20,000 troops, according to the Telegraph.

How do they afford to arm themselves?  The Foreign Policy site reported:

ISIS captured many tanks from the Iraqi army, including the relatively modern Soviet T-72, of which it may have as many as 10.
ISIS captured many tanks from the Iraqi army, including the relatively modern Soviet T-72, of which it may have as many as 10.

Much of the Islamic State’s arms and ammunition were captured on the battlefield, but intelligence reports have suggested that the group’s income from oil sales and other sources is high enough to finance purchases of additional weapons directly from the companies and dealers that routinely profit from strife in the Middle East.

While the complete list of countries is unknown, Newsweek stated on September 16 that the United States, Russia, France, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Israel and Iran are all fighting ISIS.¬† Canada wasn’t mentioned I guess in error.

ISIS territory mapped (The Economist, June 2015)

Unlike Al Qaeda, Boko Haram or any other previously seen terrorist group, ISIS has a set geographic area of the world in which they are headquartered and operate – or more appropriately to state, which they have majority “control” over.

Territory is both being conquered and lost by ISIS on an almost daily basis. In fact, the venerable New York Times reported, on the morning of Friday the 13th, that several factions of Kurdish and Yazidi fighters had just retaken the city of Sinjar from ISIS fighters.

They have a “capital city” of sorts – in Raqqa, Syria – which is exactly where French fighter pilots have attacked just today.

I’ve had it with President Obama and his pacifist BS. I’ve had it with “Prime Minister” Trudeau and his weak, emasculated, pathetic (I’m trying not to swear so this’ll have to do) world philosophy.

As my beloved home-away-from-home Paris was burned, bombed and blown up, over 350 hundred were rushed to hospitals, and 129 were driven to the morgue, in a series of coordinated attacks on Friday the 13th (not likely a coincidental date) I grew angry enough watching the news clips to fly over there, grab a gun and start defending her.

What did the two pathetic leftwing pantywaists have to say? Obama called it an “attack on humanity” – which basically dismissed it from being an attack on a sovereign nation like France, so he could cover his bases possibly if the NATO Charter was invoked; or an attack on a Western power, because frankly this socialist doesn’t give a damn about the West, including his own country.¬† But at least the US is still fighting ISIS regardless.

Justin-TrudeauPrime Minister Justin Trudeau offered ‚Äúall of Canada‚Äôs support‚ÄĚ to France on Friday night in the wake of ‚Äúdeeply worrying‚ÄĚ terrorist attacks.

ALL of our support? That doesn’t include our military obviously, as he just ordered them out of the fight against ISIS, and confirmed 24 hours ago that, regardless of the horror played out Paris, that the stupidity would continue.

Trudeau is giving lip service to mass murder. We should be ashamed of this asshole. I know I am.¬† It wasn’t an attack on humanity – it was an attack on a Western power, the second in France alone in 10 months. Both were horrific events that brought the world to a standstill.

I’m sorry to remind both of you pantywaists this, but France is a member of NATO. French President Hollande has declared the Friday the 13th terrorist attacks an ACT OF WAR. Under the NATO Charter,¬† both Canada and the United States may¬†have a legal responsibility to come to the aid of a member nation when attacked in an act of war.

The Jerusalem Post has asked the question – will France invoke Article 5 of the NATO Charter, as NATO did after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.¬† The Post doesn’t think France will actually do it, however.

Regardless, how dare¬†you violate a 67-year old international accord for your own ideological purposes? This must be discussed by the people and/or the Parliament of Canada.¬† Canada deserves better leadership than this.¬† We are pulling out of Syria only because air strikes were started under the Conservatives.¬† Would you have pulled out of D-Day for the same reasons?¬† The Korean War?¬† We think you would –¬†which is why we will never trust you, nor acknowledge you as our Prime Minister.¬† You are a coward, a sham leader, and the global village idiot.

marijuana-justin-trudeau“4/20” has become synonymous with a¬†large, festival-like event in a city near you,¬†held on April 20 annually, culminating with a massive¬†public rally¬†at 4:20 PM that day.

Live bands will¬†play, there will be¬†friends and food aplenty, everyone’s gonna be smiling, will be conducting themselves peacefully and having a good time. ¬†Maybe there will be some lameass politicians (like Justin Trudeau) trying to get in on the love and capitalize on the crowds. ¬†For the most part though, it’s relatively lowkey.

And the focus¬†for this non-stop love fest? ¬†Simply put, this event¬†is hosted for the unfettered adoration,¬†glorification, education and¬†legalization of…

Grass, 420, Ganga, Dope, Herb, Joint, Blunt, Cannabis, Reefer, Mary Jane, Bud, Stinkweed, Nuggets, Tobacco, Hay, Rope, Gangster, Skunk, Boom, Blaze, Ashes, Block, Boo, Broccoli, Burrito, Burnie, Charge.

Yep, you guessed it.  Marijuana.  Pot.  Weed.

DRUGS.

Now, no one is entirely certain why or how April 20 first related to the smoking of pot, but the Huffington Post has proposed some theories. Regardless of its roots, attendees of this¬†nonsensical “non-event”¬†singularly worship at the altar of an¬†illegal drug, at an event that has morphed from humble beginnings into a slick media-friendly production with equal hints of¬†Woodstock, an evangelistic church service,¬†Canada Day BBQ, New Year’s Eve party, political rally, and trade expo, with the script from a bad Cheech and Chong flick interwoven throughout.

But don’t kid yourself – this massive international¬†one-day “peaceful protest” is merely an anarchist “smoke screen” (pardon the pun) for the real agenda: ¬†an increasingly blatant violation of the Criminal Code of Canada; ¬†an open forum for the mockery of family values, social decency, the Law, police, the Church and government officials, all foundational elements of Canadian society but considered¬†a¬†threat to the¬†“progressive” pot agenda; and most important of all, a voice¬†for the¬†legalization¬†of the drug trade¬†in Canada and around the world. ¬†And a voice that has been bolstered by our idiot Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

And it all started in my city of Vancouver, Canada which probably doesn’t surprise you. ¬†After all, a half-baked¬†element of this city has been on the proponent frontline of the so-called War on Drugs for decades (check out our companion article on why we believe that¬†War is already over). ¬†And no one is more half-baked than Marc Emery,¬†the founder of the illegal¬†headshop HEMP BC, which opened on July 7, 1994. ¬†This¬†media-dubbed “Prince of Pot” recalls the first organization of the event in our city (emphasis mine thoughout):

I remember my store manager Danna Rozek and an employee named Cindy Lassu came up to me in early April 1995, and said, ‚ÄúMarc, can we have a 4/20 celebration on April 20th next door in Victory Park?‚ÄĚ I responded, ‚Äúlike, on 4:20 in the afternoon on April 20?‚ÄĚ and they said, ‚ÄúNo, like all day on April 20.‚ÄĚ

‚ÄúWhat will we do all day?‚ÄĚ I asked, and they said ‚ÄúSmoke pot all day and play music.‚ÄĚ I replied, ‚Äúwe can‚Äôt just smoke pot all day. That‚Äôs decadent. [emphasis mine]¬†No, you can‚Äôt do it.‚ÄĚ

Rebuffed, Ms. Rozek then asked, ‚ÄúCan we just go ahead and do it anyway even if you don‚Äôt approve?‚ÄĚ So I said yes and the staff organized the first April 20 celebration I ever heard of, at Victory Square/Park next door.

200 people came that April 20, 1995 and it was a lovely time, with music starting at 2pm and going till 7pm.

IMG_0688In 1996, over 500 people came to Victory Park and smoked pot all day with the event starting at noon.

It was decided that Victory Square was too small for the 1997 April 20 smoke-fest, so the traditional political rally location of the Vancouver Art Gallery, in downtown Vancouver’s financial district, was the site of the 1997 4/20 celebration. Over 1,000 people attended the 1997 Vancouver 4/20 and was widely covered in media and the phenomenon began to spread to other locations across North America

Like a bad virus, this event has indeed now “spread” far and wide –¬†in 2015 alone, rallies were reported in Canadian cities including Vancouver, Toronto, Victoria, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Ottawa and more. ¬†US cities know to have rallies included Denver, New York, Boston, San Francisco, Oakland, Dallas, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Miami and many others. ¬†And even Australia, New Zealand and parts of Europe were toking /¬†smoking up in support.

At this year’s Vancouver event, people were already beginning to assemble at 9:00 AM. ¬†The event has in fact become so¬†large, it even has its own website and organizing committee. ¬†The festivities continued throughout the day, and the crowds continued to grow, as live bands played, and tons of food trucks served up their best. ¬†(As an aside, holy cow¬†can stoned people ever EAT¬†– all the¬†local 7-11 stores were¬†almost completely emptied of …. well everything¬†during the day).

At 4:20, a hush fell over the crowd – as did a massive cloud of pot smoke – as the 20,000 Vancouver 4/20 attendees all lit up at once.

Later in the afternoon, the crowds grea, on this 20th Anniversary event, to an estimated (and slightly suspicious) stoned-out throng of over 20,000 people.

Then came the speeches and the rally posters and the typical, “Harper-is-the-Antichrist-and-Trudeau-is-cool-cause-he’s-a-pothead-though-none-of-us-actually-plan-to-vote” kind of rhetoric. ¬†The “highlight” ¬†was the Crown Prince of Illegal Drug Trafficking, Marc Emergy himself (who had been recently sprung from an¬†American jail cell after serving time for drug trafficking charges). ¬†His momma must be very proud.

Right at 4:19:50, the massive crowd of 20,000 began to countdown from 10 Рand you could hear them for blocks doing so.  I know, because my legal services firm office is literally 1/2 block away from the centre of the action.

Then, right at 4:20, silence fell over the downtown core, as thousands of stoners all lit up their joints and pipes at once.  I think you could see the cloud of pot smoke from the International Space Station.  It was literally like a massive fog had descended without warning on the downtown core.  You could likely smell it from there too.

Now, I leave my office in Downtown Vancouver at 5:00 PM daily, and I have in the past felt stoned against my will, just by walking to the Skytrain station from my office – only 3 blocks away.

IMG_0695-0This year, I decided to quickly walk around the grounds of the Gallery though first and get some photos, and see if there was anything interesting to report for this blog.  What I witnessed was so surprising, I am still trying to process what it is I was seeing.

Beside the Art Gallery there was a bit of a trade expo going on, with perhaps 20-30 booths – business people selling food (food trucks were making an absolute fortune with 20,000 people getting the munchies at once), bongs; pot cookies, brownies and other “baked” goods…

And what’s THIS? ¬†At least 10 booths openly, aggressively, unashamedly selling DRUGS in front of the police. ¬†This wasn’t behind closed doors at a medical marijuana dispensary. ¬†This wasn’t some greasy sketch nervously eyeing the crowd around him as he slipped you a baggie in a back alley.

No Рone booth actually had a 5-GALLON PAIL full of pot baggies Рestimated at tens of thousands of dollars Рall completely out and open, weighing out pot strains with crazy names like Cotton Candy, Purple Kush and Sour Diesel.

Yes, I may have been the only one in the city unaware that¬†there are drug dealers everywhere at a 4/20 Event. ¬†And these dealers don’t need to whisper you into a back alley to complete transactions. ¬†No no –¬†they can reserve a free¬†trade show booth¬†at this event – selling¬†the stinky, sticky buds as if they were¬†selling¬†bulk peanuts at Superstore. They GET A BUSINESS LICENSE From the city of Vancouver¬†to hawk their illegal wares.

Underage? Not a problem – the industry is obviously¬†not regulated since it’s usually ILLEGAL. ¬†I saw many young people who were clearly not yet 18 buying and toking up, under the full view of Vancouver Police officers. Clearly, no photo ID must be¬†required. ¬†In fact, a good percentage of the crowd at the 420 event in Downtown Vancouver were underage high school students.

This fact alone enrages me. ¬†In fact, Vancouver Coastal Health has called¬†for a ban of “edibles” (pot brownies, etc) to minors. ¬†Why? ¬†Because in 2015 alone, more than 100 kids under the age of 15 were hospitalized for overdosing.

If this Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Patricia Daly, actually gave a damn about the situation, she wouldn’t be releasing a statement 2 days before the event when it was bound to be completely useless.

In fact, I think people ought to be writing or calling her today and thanking her for her useless leadership in this issue:

Dr. Patricia Daly, Chief Medical Health Officer & Vice-President, Public Health
800 ‚Äď 601 West Broadway
Vancouver, BC V5Z 4C2
Tel: 604.675.3900
Fax: 604.731.2756

My tongue was firmly planted in my cheek as I started to write this posting – as¬†unlike 20,000 of my¬†fellow¬†citizens in Vancouver on 4/20,¬†I could still actually feel my tongue and my cheek.¬† But when I saw how blatantly the drug trade was allowed to operate in Vancouver on 4/20, I got angry. ¬†Not Nancy Reagan “Just Say No” kind of angry. ¬†No, this was more like Jesus-kicking-the-moneychangers-out-of-the-temple angry. ¬†I wanted to seriously kick some ass.

I wanted to light it all on fire.

Previously, if you wanted to buy pot in Greater Vancouver, I understand you had to catch some sketchy looking guy on a street corner, or call one of these dial-a-dope operations. ¬†(I’m curious – does the¬†“dope” refer to what you are¬†buying or who you were buying it from?¬†¬†Things that make you go hmmmm….)

What a difference a day makes!

IMG_0689-0On April 19, according to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Section 4(1), trafficking in marijuana or hashish or possession for the purpose of trafficking (over 3 kgs.) could land a dealer a life sentence in prison, with a minimum of 2 years if he/she committed the offence (a) in or near a school or any other public place usually frequented by minors (b) at a prison, or (c) with the assistance or involvement of a minor.

But on April 20, these same¬†dealers have been elevated to legitimate business owners¬†with websites, business cards, brochures, letterhead. ¬†And at 4/20, with 20,000 customers ready and willing, one¬†could sell an entire year’s supply of pot in one afternoon- at a place clearly frequented by a LOT of minors. ¬†It’s like Boxing Day for the Blasted. ¬†Black Friday for the Fried. ¬†A giant one day Sale for the Smashed.

And Vancouver Police just stand around and watch. ¬†Well done. ¬†Like the Stanley Cup riots a few years ago, I feel so much better knowing you are on duty, protecting our city’s vital interests and….

Oh great. ¬†You’re high too, aren’t you. ¬†Ugh, never mind.
