Yellowstone Update #1: 464 Earthquakes in 10 Days!

Did you know that Yellowstone National Park – home of world-famous bears with strange names like Smokey, Yogi and Boo – sits atop one of the world’s largest super-volcanoes?  This ancient super-volcano, or caldera, that lies beneath the surface of the Park was discovered by scientists in recent years to be 2.5 times larger than was previously thought.

About 1,000 to 3,000 earthquakes strike Yellowstone each year, according to the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, a research partnership of the Park, the University of Utah and the U.S. Geological Survey.  Researchers with the observatory have tried to reassure citizens that major eruptions of this super-volcano are not likely for tens of thousands of years, “though less extreme lava releases could occur within thousands of years.”

This super-volcano ‘s most destructive eruption occurred millennia ago, according to Observatory researchers, covering half of North America with ash and killing prehistoric animals as far away as modern-day Nebraska.  But we have nothing to worry about now, correct?

Wrong.  As you will soon see, not only has Yellowstone just recorded it’s strongest earthquake in 34 years, the Park has been shaken by 464 of themin the last 10 days.

Yellowstone National Park spans 3,472 square miles (8,992 square km) of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, and draws about 3 million visitors each year to its geysers like iconic Old Faithful, and wildlife attractions, including bison.

According to the National Park Service‘s official website for Yellowstone, the Park is one of the most seismically active areas in the United States. Between 1,000-3,000 earthquakes occur each year in the Yellowstone area, with most being so small they aren’t felt.

They result from the enormous number of faults associated with the volcano.  And in the last few years, their intensity and frequency have skyrocketed.

Scientific American reported that Yellowstone was struck on Sunday, March 30, 2014,  by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake, the biggest recorded there since February 1980, but no damage or injuries were reported. At the time, the tremor, a relatively light event by seismic standards, struck the northwest corner of the park in the midst of a swarm of smaller quakes that lasted several days, geologists at the University of Utah Seismograph Stations said in a statement.

Now, Fox News has reported this week (June 21, 2017) that the Yellowstone super-volcano has been hit with more than 400 earthquakes since June 12.  Researchers say it’s nothing to be alarmed about, though?  In a statement to the Star Valley Independent, scientists from the University of Utah — which monitors the volcano — said the earthquake swarms are nothing new:

“This is the highest number of earthquakes at Yellowstone within a single week in the past five years, but is fewer than weekly counts during similar earthquakes swarms in 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010,” scientists explained.

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded on June 15, the most powerful in this recent swarm, according to a statement issued June 19.  At that time, 464 events had been recorded since June 12.  Researchers noted that the swarm of quakes has registered 30 of a magnitude 2 or larger, and four quakes of magnitude 3 or larger.

Fox News quoted a statement issued by the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) on its website:

“Earthquake swarms are common in Yellowstone and, on average, comprise about 50% of the total seismicity in the Yellowstone region,”  the “UUSS will continue to monitor this swarm and will provide updates as necessary.”

If the Yellowstone volcano were to erupt, it would kill an estimated 87,000 people immediately, and make two-thirds of the USA immediately uninhabitable. The large spew of ash into the atmosphere would block out sunlight and directly affect life beneath it, creating a “nuclear winter” and threatening ALL life on earth, as the UK newspaper the Express stated this week.  The volcano is 80 km (50 mi) long 20 km (12 mi) wide and the 1500F chamber of molten rock beneath the surface is seven miles deep.  The caldera is so huge, volcano-hunting scientists failed to spot it for years, unaware they were walking all over it.

The massive eruption could be a staggering 6,000 times as powerful as the one from Washington’s Mount St Helens in 1980 which killed 57 people and deposited ash in 11 different states and five Canadian provinces.  Additionally, a climate shift would ensue as the volcano would spew massive amounts of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, which can form a sulphur aerosol that reflects and absorbs sunlight.

On April 30,  Forbes.com announced that a massive lake of molten carbon,  the size of Mexico was recently found under Yellowstone.  The molten carbonate sits beneath Yellowstone National Park, which in and of itself is a super volcano with the power of a massive eruption. The last major eruption was 640,000 years ago at Yellowstone. However, if the super volcano did erupt, it could cause the US to go into a volcanic winter.

So yes, I don’t care what these scientists tell us – it’s a BIG DEAL that there are so many earthquakes, and ones with such intensity, happening at Yellowstone National Park.  Scientists wouldn’t tell us what is really going on if it was a terrible situation in the making – what could we possibly do about it besides refusing to go to work, not paying our bills, etc. which would grind society to a halt.

NASA has been also concerned about this super-volcano of late, and they have scrambled their SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy), a highly sensitive infrared telescope built into a converted Boeing 747, the world’s largest and most sensitive airborne observatory. Flying at 39,000 to 45,000 feet, it will enable scientific observations that are impossible for even the largest and highest of Earth-based telescopes.

If NASA puts its SOFIA in the air, it’s important.  Already four days during sunrise/sunset, NASA was monitoring the sun.  However, on June 12, 2017, flightradar24 shows that they are now also monitoring Yellowstone National Park too.

Rabbi Yosef Berger, the rabbi of King David’s Tomb on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, told Breaking Israel News:

“Tsunamis, earthquakes, and forest fires are more catastrophic than ever, despite technology giving us the ability to cope with them better.  And now scientists tell us of threats we absolutely cannot protect us against, like a volcano that threatens the world.”

The Rabbi added that “This is a special attribute of the end of days.”

You cannot be “too prepared” for a monumental natural disaster like this super-volcano, but today, one doesn’t have to be impacted by something that large.  Thunderstorms, tornados, flooding, hurricanes, power failures, blizzards, hail storms and other events you cannot control …can still control you!  Be prepared – have an emergency kit available in your home at all times!  Check out our Survivalist Store, where we have many of the items your home should not be without in the event of a major issue.

Don’t expect the government to take care of you – you will be on your own for as long as 72 hours or more in the event of a major issue.
